February 22, 2010 - A 10-year-old girl in Yemen was married off to an aged husband by her father in return for the equivalent of a $1,000 dowry. Despite almost daily rapings and beatings, the girl, now 12, is not permitted to divorce her husband because sharia law requires girls to be 15 to divorce. So, her fate rests in the hands of the 2 men who control her life: her father and her husband. In Yemen, approximately 48% of girls are married off before they turn 18.
